IEP Student Advocate Volunteers Needed

School aged patients at behavioral health facility need volunteers to attend an IEP meeting (Individual Educational Plan) as their advocate. 1-2 hour commitment. One time per student.

Strategic Behavioral Health is a for profit system of mental health hospitals. We provide acute and residential mental health services to underserved populations – ages 5 to 18 and the geriatric population. We have a school for our long term school aged residents. Many of our patients/residents do not have family support and lack a parent/guardian who will attend and advocate for them at IEP (Independent Educational Plan) meetings. State law requires that the student have an advocate, and the meetings cannot happen without an advocate. The students’ educational plan frequently gets delayed for the lack of a person who will attend the meeting. Employees of Strategic are not permitted to be that advocate. We need volunteers to agree to attend the IEP meetings as the student’s advocate. It would be helpful if the volunteer has attended IEP meetings before and have a heart for advocating for students who need additional services. No special knowledge of services is required, just a willingness to speak up.
