#BackPackBuddies Mediathon

We need your help to feed more children, more families, more of your hungry neighbors.

On July 19th, the Food Shuttle is once again partnering with WRAL and MIX 101.5 for our annual #BackPackBuddies Mediathon. During the daylong fundraiser, we hope to raise $200,000 to continue to grow our child hunger programs and make an impact in the lives of children throughout our seven-county service area.

In 2016-2017, we served 2,133 children with Backpack Buddies PER WEEK. That’s almost 80,000 bags and 500,000 meals a year! We STOCKED 17 school pantries with a variety of fresh, nutritious foods, AND have a goal to add seven more school pantries in the 2017-18 school year.

But the work is never done and we are constantly assessing the need.

  • We want to reach rural schools, where food resources are especially scarce. However, this increase in BackPack Buddies and school pantry deliveries will require a new cargo van to better service those counties.
  • In Durham County, we need more storage space for our BackPack Buddies food collection in order to reach more children in need in schools with especially high free and reduced-price lunch rates.
  • And in Wake County we hear stories like the one from Swift Creek Elementary where often an entire family is fed over a weekend out of only one backpack of food. We want to ensure that every hungry child at Swift Creek and every school gets their own bag, but that requires more food and more manpower.

BackPack Buddies are the first line of food defense for children who would otherwise go without during the weekend. Help us ensure that we can be there for these kids when no one else is.

The money we raise at Mediathon will help us accomplish these goals and feed more of the 118,000 children in need of food in our service area. Tune into WRAL or listen live on Mix 101.5 on July 19th and give to ensure no child goes hungry.

About Inter-Faith Food Shuttle

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is an innovative hunger-relief organization serving seven counties in and around the Triangle. We believe hunger IS fixable if the community works together to do two things: create sources of healthy food in every low-income neighborhood and grow opportunities for people to provide for themselves by learning job skills or growing their own food. From BackPack Buddies to nutrition education, mobile markets to culinary job training to urban agriculture training, we go directly to people in need and create what works to empower them. We feed. We teach. We grow… to create a hunger-free and healthy community.
